20 days until the World Premiere of 51 Degrees North and Asteroid Day

Dear All,

We are excited and blown away by the amazing support we've received over the past few weeks and days. We are just about to get our DCP made (Digital Cinema Package) made and applied for BBFC certification, which we'll receive next week. The DCP allows commercial theaters to screen the film on a digital projector and the BBFC certification gives us an age rating for the film.

You can count the days till our world premiere on four hands! It's amazing how far we've come over the past 5 years. What started as a tiny passion for a project between a few friends has turned into the first film to ever kick-start a global awareness movement, Asteroid Day!

If you are in London on June 30th, then grab some premiere tickets here. 51º North will premiere at the Science Museum (in the IMAX). You will also be able to catch an alternative cut of 51º Degrees on Discovery Science and Discovery Channel across many countries around the world.

All the best,

Grig

STARMUS - DAY 0

DAY 0: Arrival Day at Starmus!!

Sunday 21st September, 2014.

Sunday was the official arrival day at STARMUS, the most prestigious science festival in the world featuring presentations from astronauts, cosmonauts, Nobel Prize winners and prominent figures from science, culture, the arts and music, located in Tenerife, Spain.

All the speakers have arrived, including the likes of Brian May, Richard Dawkins and a number of Nobel Prize winners such as Sir Harold Kroto, John Mather and Walter Cunningham.

Stephen Hawking has already been here for a week taking in the sights at beautiful sunny Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain - what great weather we've had for the festival so far!

Last night Dolly-Ann (Ann), Snoopy (aka Space Dog) and I attended a cocktail party where we met all the other VIP guests and speakers and had the chance to catch up with Brian May and the organiser of Starmus, Garik. Garik introduced me to Stephen Hawking and, as you can imagine, the nerves set in! It was quite a surreal experience finally meeting the man himself: one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein. His work on the origins of the structure of the Universe, the Big Bang and black holes has revolutionised the field of cosmology.

Garik explained to Mr Hawking that I was the director of 51º NORTH, an independent docu-drama film communicating the threat of asteroids to earth by following the journey of Damon Miller, a budding filmmaker tasked to capture the last moments of life on earth before it collides with an apocalyptic asteroid.

Hawking was hooked, he instantly wanted to know more about the film. He asked his assistant to find me and tell him further details. So there I was... standing in front of the man himself for five minutes discussing my film. He was intrigued by the topic and how we intended to mix science with fiction.

Hawking went on to spot Space Dog Snoopy in Dolly-Ann's bag and smiled (his nurses told us) and Dolly-Ann offered him to take photos with Space Dog Snoopy! He seemed to like the idea and Snoopy quickly ended up on his lap. Within seconds dozens of people gathered around him to take pictures and Dolly-Ann ended up in the photo herself with Snoopy and Hawking.

The night progressed very well with everyone showing an interest in the film. I had a chance to talk to Russian Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first person to ever walk in space. After an hour of mingling we went for dinner with Professor of Paleoanthropology, Katerina Harvati, and her family. We were also joined by Nobel Prize winning scientist, Robert Wilson, accompanied by his wife and spotted Richard Dawkins whom we invited to join us for dinner.

We had a beautiful four course dinner with a group of brilliant minds who all seemed to enjoy the premise of 51º NORTH very much. We had a very long discussion about what we currently do to protect Earth from Asteroids. What a fantastic first day and the festival hadn't even started yet!! We'll continue to keep you updated about our experiences so please stay tuned for direct updates from Starmus.

A Peek into Post Production

A Peek into Post Production

Tucked in the corner of a mews right between the bustling Bond and Baker Streets is a group of hardworking and aspiring filmmakers, who work day and night for the upcoming sci-fi feature film, 51 Degrees. Here the days start early, run after dark and often throughout the night when director Greg can’t get his eyes off from transcoding, and Assistant Producer, Digna, carries on working with people involved in the film overseas.

The location was Leake Street, close to Waterloo station with a tunnel of a few-hundred metres apparently known as the ‘Banksy Tunnel’ running through it. At the end of this tunnel was where a little bit more of 51 Degrees was going to be filmed.

Production Journal Part 3 - The Last of the Piccadilly Chaos

Earlier this morning, I arrived at Trafalgar Square at about nine o’clock to meet with some of the already waiting cast and crew. They were accompanied by a few extras that would be needed for today’s filming needed to complete the Piccadilly chaos.

The destination was Hampstead Heath but before going off to meet up with the cast and crew of 51 Degrees, I first met with Scott Buxton who had been given the task to go and and hunt down some beer for the crew...

UPDATE: Live Stream - Asteroid "The Beast" will fly by Earth on Sunday June 8, 2014.

Humanity should be thankful "The Beast" doesn't have Earth in its crosshairs. This Sunday (June 8), the near-Earth asteroid 2014 HQ124—which some observers have nicknamed "The Beast"—will give the planet a relatively close shave, coming within 777,000 miles (1.25 million kilometers) at its closest approach, or about 3.25 times the distance from Earth to the moon...

It was just shy of 5:00 PM when there were 15 people piled into the small one bedroom flat that has become the office for 51 Degrees. Damon had now arrived and the film no longer belonged to pre-production...
